10 Best Tartu Teams to Kaleidoskoop Finals

On the 12th of December one of the biggest students’ business ideas competition Kaleidoskoop Pre-selection round took place for the 13th time at the SPARK HUB. 36 teams pitched their ambitious business ideas to the jury who selected 10 best to go to Kaleidoskoop Finals at  the business festival sTARTUp Day on the 30th of January.

Business ideas competition Kaleidoskoop Pre-selection took place for the 13th time and brought together 36 teams from different fields and locations. Each team had 3 minutes to pitch their idea to the jury who had 5 minutes for questions and comments. The jury members were:  Aivar Pere (UT business advisor), Taavi Tamm (STARTERpärnu programme manager), Ants-Oskar Mäesalu (Co-founder & CTO of TRIT), Liis Järvamägi (sTARTUp Day Youth Area Manager) and Joosep Sild ( Co-founder of SmartVent).

„It was probably the strongest pre-selection round in the history of Kaleidoskoop which made it quite difficult for the jury to pick only 10 teams for the finals “, said member of the jury Taavi Tamm. „Many teams had a working prototype, some had even managed to find their first paying customers within past 3 months. It was great to witness that kind of progress in such a short time-frame “.

In  the Finals top 10 teams will compete to win awards like tickets to TechCill business festival, financial award from Tartu City Government and special awards form sTARTUp Lab. Best STARTER programme team will get to pitch at all-Estonionian STARTER Pitching for the STARTER of the Year Team Award.

Jury member Ants-Oskar Mäesalu gave the following recommendations for the Kaleidoskoop finalists:

  • Be very clear and concise on both the problem and the solution. Think about your business, and go the extra mile to show why what you are doing is unique, important and valuable.
  •  Show your expertise. New things raise doubt, so build trust. Sell the grand vision, but show the steps you’re taking to get there.
  • Pitching is a show. Inspire, surprise and entertain. Open up and have a good time. And the people will, as well.
  •  Creating the perfect pitch is not a one-off task, but rather a process. Write a pitch, practice and present it. Rework it and repeat the process.
